Target Background

Function
Regulates photoreceptor cell deactivation. Arr1 and Arr2 proteins are mediators of rhodopsin inactivation and are essential for the termination of the phototransduction cascade.
Gene References into Functions
  1. Arr1 translocates to rhabdomeres to modulate deactivation of phosphorylated rhodopsin in adult photoreceptors but becomes internalized in pupal photoreceptors. PMID: 24838243
  2. Arr1 mediates an endocytotic cell-survival activity, scavenging phosphorylated rhodopsin and thereby countering toxic Arr2/Rh1 accumulation. PMID: 16213818
Protein Families
Arrestin family
Tissue Specificity
Expressed specifically and abundantly in the photoreceptors. Inner and outer segments, and the inner plexiform regions of the retina.
