Target Background

Function
Transcriptional regulator. May mediate transcription activation by binding to the E box-containing promoter. Involved in neurogenesis. Involved in maintaining rhombomere boundaries in the hindbrain, probably via up-regulation of delta expression. May mediate transcription activation by binding to the E box-containing promoter.
Gene References into Functions
  1. Data demonstrate that MASH1/Ascl1a is a fundamental regulator of axonal growth across vertebrates and can induce modifications to the intrinsic state of neurons to promote functional regeneration in response to central nervous system injury. PMID: 25751153
  2. ascl1b/Ascl1 silencing by valproic acid results in the failure of serotonergic differentiation in a zebrafish model of fetal valproate syndrome PMID: 24135485
  3. The control of endocrine cell fate is instead fulfilled by two basic helix-loop-helix factors, Ascl1b and Neurod1 and NEUROG3 is not the unique pancreatic endocrine cell fate determinant in vertebrates. PMID: 23835295
Subcellular Location
Nucleus.
Tissue Specificity
In the 24 hours embryo, expressed in hindbrain close to the anterior and posterior boundaries of rhombomeres 2-6 and in ventral cells close to the floor plate of most rhombomeres. Also expressed in the telencephalon, diencephalon, tegmentum and spinal cor
