Target Background

Function
Atypical kinase involved in the biosynthesis of coenzyme Q, also named ubiquinone, an essential lipid-soluble electron transporter for aerobic cellular respiration. Affects the molecular organization and function of COQ3, possibly through kinase activity towards COQ3, COQ5 and/or COQ7. Its substrate specificity is unclear: does not show any protein kinase activity. Probably acts as a small molecule kinase, possibly a lipid kinase that phosphorylates a prenyl lipid in the ubiquinone biosynthesis pathway, as suggested by its ability to bind coenzyme Q lipid intermediates.
Gene References into Functions
  1. ADCK3/COQ8 localises to mitochondrial cristae and is targeted to this organelle via the presence of an N-terminal localisation signal PMID: 26866375
  2. Data indicate that the overexpression of Coq8 and the use of 4-hydroxybenzoic acid analogues represent innovative tools to elucidate the Q biosynthetic pathway. PMID: 22593570
  3. COQ8 identified as mitochondrial protein that affects molecular organization of Coq3p and may act as a kinase with Coq3p as a target. PMID: 18801050
