Target Background

Function
MAPKKK serine/threonine-protein kinase involved in the regulation of a MAP kinase cascade (probably including MPK3 and MPK6) that negatively regulates salicylic acid- (SA-) dependent defense responses, abscisic acid (ABA) signaling, and ethylene-induced senescence. Modulates also stress response (e.g. drought) signaling and cell death, in an ORE9-dependent manner. Functions at a point of cross talk between ethylene, ABA and SA signaling that impinges on senescence and cell death. On the other hand, it confers sensitivity to various pathogens such as the fungus E.cichoracearum, the oomycete H.parasitica and the bacteria P.syringae pv. tomato DC3000. Required for resistance to some hemibiotrophic/necrotrophic fungal pathogens (e.g. C.gloeosporioides, C.higginsianum and A.brassicicola) through the induction of defensin expression, probably by repressing MYC2, an inhibitor of defensin genes (PDFs). Together with KEG, may regulate endocytic trafficking and/or the formation of signaling complexes on trans-Golgi network (TGN)/ early endosome (EE) vesicles during stress responses.
Gene References into Functions
  1. EDR4 associates with CHC2 and modulates plant immunity by regulating the relocation of EDR1 in Arabidopsis. PMID: 25747881
  2. ATL1 is a positive regulator of programmed cell death and EDR1 negatively regulates ATL1 activity at the TGN/EE and thus controls stress responses initiated by ATL1-mediated ubiquitination events. PMID: 25398498
  3. A natural edr1 mutant in the background of C24, was identified. PMID: 24925473
  4. It was concluded that EDR1 contributes to the defense response of A. thaliana against P. infestans; these data position EDR1 as a negative regulator in postinvasive nonhost resistance. PMID: 25353364
  5. A catalytically inactive form of the EDR1 kinase domain was successfully crystallized in the presence of the ATP analogue AMP-PNP. PMID: 25005098
  6. EDR1 functions as a positive regulator of non-host resistance independently of PEN2, and is critical for pathogen-induced expression of plant defensins. PMID: 22057322
  7. EDR1 exerts a positive and critical role in resistance responses to hemibiotrophic/necrotrophic fungi, in part by inducing antifungal protein expression through derepression of MYC2 function. PMID: 21605210
  8. The expression of many known and putative defence-associated genes was more rapidly induced, and to higher levels, in edr1 plants relative to the wild-type PMID: 21726375
  9. EDR1 exerted negative regulation on HR cell death and powdery mildew resistance by limiting the transcriptional amplification of RPW8.1 and RPW8.2. PMID: 15773856
  10. The edr1 mutant displays enhanced stress responses and spontaneous necrotic lesions under drought conditions in the absence of pathogen, suggesting that EDR1 is also involved in stress response signaling and cell death regulation. PMID: 15894742
  11. conclude that edr1-mediated resistance to powdery mildew is mediated, in part, by enhanced ABA signaling PMID: 18815384
