Target Background

Function
Recognizes and binds the 7-methylguanosine-containing mRNA cap during an early step in the initiation of protein synthesis and facilitates ribosome binding by inducing the unwinding of the mRNAs secondary structures. In 0-1 hour embryos, forms a complex with me31B, cup, tral and pAbp which binds to various mRNAs including maternal mRNAs, and downregulates their expression during the maternal-to-zygotic transition.
Gene References into Functions
  1. Both eIF4E-1 and eIF4E-3 are required in spermatocytes for chromosome condensation and cytokinesis during the meiotic stages. PMID: 25849588
  2. Protein-protein interactions rather than interactions with the mRNA are essential for the recruitment of eIF4E and for a putative nucleation function. PMID: 22507384
  3. Eukaryotic initiation factor 4E-3 is essential for meiotic chromosome segregation, cytokinesis and male fertility in Drosophila. PMID: 22833128
  4. eIF4E regulates the sex-specific expression of the master switch gene Sxl. PMID: 21829374
Subcellular Location
Cytoplasm, Cytoplasmic ribonucleoprotein granule.
Protein Families
Eukaryotic initiation factor 4E family
Tissue Specificity
Expressed at the posterior end of developing oocytes (at protein level). Preferential expression in the pole cells, at different developmental stages.
