Target Background

Function
Component of the MIM complex required for mitochondrial outer membrane protein import. The MIM complex cooperates with the receptor TOM70 in binding of precursor proteins and promotes their insertion and assembly into the outer membrane. Involved in import of the subset of proteins with multiple alpha-helical transmembrane segments, including UGO1. Required for the assembly of the TOM (translocase of outer membrane) receptor complex, which is responsible for the recognition and translocation of cytosolically synthesized mitochondrial preproteins. Required specifically for asssembly of TOM40, TOM20, and TOM70, but not TOM22.
Gene References into Functions
  1. The mitochondrial import component Mim1 forms a channel in the outer mitochondrial membrane that is predicted to have an alpha-helical structure for protein import. PMID: 28916712
  2. Tom70 and Djp1 are crucial players in the biogenesis of Mim1. PMID: 23959800
  3. mitochondria lacking the mitochondrial import protein 1 are impaired in the biogenesis of multispanning outer membrane proteins, whereas overexpression of Mim1 stimulates their import. PMID: 21825073
  4. The multifunctional outer membrane protein mitochondrial import 1 (Mim1) plays a central role in mediating the insertion of Ugo1. PMID: 21825074
  5. Mim1 has a vital and specific function in the assembly of the translocase of the outer mitochondrial membrane PMID: 15608614
  6. Data Show taht Mim1 plays an important role in the efficient assembly of the mitochondrial TOM complex. PMID: 17974559
