Target Background

Function
Voltage-dependent high-conductance channel with a slight cation-selectivity; selective for amino acids but excludes triosephosphates or uncharged sugars. Non-essential amino acid-selective channel protein and translocation pore for NADPH:protochlorophyllide oxidoreductase A (PORA) and possibly PORB. Involved in PORA precursor (pPORA) import and thus confers photoprotection onto etiolated seedlings during greening.
Gene References into Functions
  1. OEP16-L is expressed predominantly in leaves, is induced strongly by low-temperature stress and shows weak induction in response to osmotic stress, salicylic acid and exogenous ABA. PMID: 16709189
  2. The loss of OEP16.1 neither correlates with impaired NADPH:protochlorophyllide oxidoreductase A import nor causes the observed de-etiolation phenotype. PMID: 19567834
Subcellular Location
Plastid, chloroplast outer membrane; Multi-pass membrane protein. Plastid, etioplast membrane; Multi-pass membrane protein.
Protein Families
Tim17/Tim22/Tim23 family, Plastid outer envelope porin OEP16 (TC 1.B.30) subfamily
Tissue Specificity
Expressed predominantly in leaves and cotyledons.
