Target Background

Function

Flavoenzyme involved in polyamine back-conversion. Catalyzes the oxidation of the secondary amino group of polyamines, such as spermine, spermidine and their acetyl derivatives. Substrate preference is spermidine > spermine > N(1)-acetylspermidine > N(1)-acetylspermine. Plays an important role in the regulation of polyamine intracellular concentration (Probable). Involved in the production of hydrogen peroxide during pollen tube growth. Hydrogen peroxide triggers the opening of the hyperpolarization-activated calcium permeable channels in pollen, and thus regulates pollen tube growth.

Pollen from two mutants lacking expression of AtPAO3 was unable to induce the opening of the Ca(2+) -permeable channels in the presence of Spd, resulting in reduced pollen tube growth and seed number. PMID: 20626657
AtPAO3 catalyzes the sequential conversion/oxidation of spermine to spermidine, and of spermidine to putrescine, thus exhibiting functional homology to the mammalian PAOs. PMID: 18583528
