Target Background

Function
Required for assembly or stability of RuBisCO. Acts at a postchaperonin step to fold and/or assemble the large subunit (rbcL) into RuBisCO. RAF1 brackets an rbcL dimer (rbcL(2)), leading to rbcL(8)-RAF1(4) complex formation. In the next step, RBCS displaces RAF1, thus resulting in holoenzyme formation.
Gene References into Functions
  1. Raf1 from Synechococcus elongatus acts downstream of chaperonin-assisted RbcL folding by stabilizing RbcL antiparallel dimers for assembly into RbcL8 complexes with four Raf1 dimers bound. [Raf1] PMID: 26237510
  2. These findings highlight the importance of ancillary protein complementarity during Rubisco biogenesis in plastids, the possible constraints this has imposed on Rubisco adaptive evolution.[AtRAF1] PMID: 25733857
Subcellular Location
Plastid, chloroplast.
