Target Background

Function
Cleaves phosphorylated sphingoid bases (PSBs), such as sphingosine-1-phosphate, into fatty aldehydes and phosphoethanolamine. Sphingolipid catabolism is required for normal development including viability, reproduction and muscle development.
Gene References into Functions
  1. In Drosophila, Sply mutants, which lack SGPL1, displayed a phenotype reminiscent of nephrotic syndrome in nephrocytes. PMID: 28165339
  2. cloning of the sphingosine-1-phosphate lyase gene (Sply) and its importance for adult muscle development and integrity, reproduction and larval viability PMID: 12702658
  3. There are defects in reproductive structures and function that are associated with enhanced apoptosis in Drosophila Sply05091 mutants that lack functional S1P lyase and thereby accumulate sphingolipid long chain base metabolites. PMID: 17706961
Subcellular Location
Endoplasmic reticulum membrane; Single-pass type III membrane protein.
Protein Families
Group II decarboxylase family, Sphingosine-1-phosphate lyase subfamily
Tissue Specificity
Localized to the developing gut primordium during embryogenesis.
