Target Background

Function
Functions in nuclear protein import as nuclear transport receptor. Serves as receptor for nuclear localization signals (NLS) in cargo substrates. Is thought to mediate docking of the importin/substrate complex to the nuclear pore complex (NPC) through binding to nucleoporin and the complex is subsequently translocated through the pore by an energy requiring, Ran-dependent mechanism. At the nucleoplasmic side of the NPC, Ran binds to the importin, the importin/substrate complex dissociates and importin is re-exported from the nucleus to the cytoplasm where GTP hydrolysis releases Ran. The directionality of nuclear import is thought to be conferred by an asymmetric distribution of the GTP- and GDP-bound forms of Ran between the cytoplasm and nucleus. Involved in nuclear import of M9-containing proteins. In vitro, binds directly to the M9 region of the glycine-rich RNA-binding RBG7 and mediates its nuclear import.
Gene References into Functions
  1. Results indicate that TRN1 positively regulates miRNA activity by promoting the association of miRNAs with AGO1, and they reveal opposing roles of two importin beta family proteins in miRNA loading. PMID: 27662897
  2. Results show that tranportin 1 (AtTRN1) recognizes a broad spectrum of proteins having diverse functions, which will potentially be the cargoes of AtTRN1. PMID: 26650834
Subcellular Location
Cytoplasm. Nucleus, nucleoplasm. Note=Shuttles continuously between the nucleus and the cytoplasm.
Protein Families
Importin beta family, Importin beta-2 subfamily
