Target Background

Function

Probable substrate recognition component of a CBC (Cul2-ElonginB-ElonginC) E3 ubiquitin-protein ligase complex which mediates the ubiquitination and subsequent proteasomal degradation of target proteins. Ensures germline precursor cell asymmetry by targeting germline proteins for destruction if expressed in non-germline cells. This process also requires elc-1, cul-2, rbx-1 and ubc-2.

It was shown that ZIF-1 expression in embryos is regulated by five maternally-supplied RNA-binding proteins. POS-1, MEX-3, and SPN-4 function as repressors of ZIF-1 expression, whereas MEX-5 and MEX-6 antagonize this repression. PMID: 22265679
zif-1 encodes the substrate-binding subunit of the E3 ligase for PIE-1 degradation during germline specification. PMID: 20826530
results show that five CCCH finger proteins, components of the Caenorhabditis elegans germ plasm, are targeted for degradation by the novel CCCH-finger-binding protein ZIF-1 [ZIF-1] PMID: 12894212
