D68 is a non-specific antigen marker located on the surface of monocytes/phagocytes such as macrophages and dendritic cells, belonging to the large granular neutrophils. Its structure is mainly composed of 354 amino acids, which is located on the cell membrane, endosome membrane, and lysosome membrane. It can bind to tissue- and organ-specific lectins or selectins, potentially triggering a series of intracellular signaling cascades. This binding may have significant effects on macrophage homing, regulation of inflammatory responses, and immune responses.
Functionally, CD68 plays a wide and diverse role. Firstly, it participates in the homing process of macrophages, assisting these cells in gathering at sites of infection or inflammation to perform immune defense functions.
